The entire Lightning Ridge experience - about 3 hours

Twice daily at 9am & 2pm - 7 days a week

  • Friendly and knowledgeable local tour guides. All our guides grew up or have lived in our multi-cultural town for a long time and have been involved in the opal industry in one way or the other

  • Travel through the scenic Three Mile Opal Fields

  • Visit Lunatic Hill - the biggest and richest open cut in Lightning Ridge

  • Opportunity for fossicking (this means looking for opals)

  • We take you to this famous Lightning Ridge tourist attraction AMIGO´S CASTLE which has recently been featured on "Better Homes and Gardens" with Johanna Griggs. OUTBACK OPAL TOURS is the only business in town having exclusive rights to show you inside and around AMIGO´S CASTLE

  • See and hear all about life in the opal fields and in our unique outback mining town of Lightning Ridge

  • Visit the famous BIG OPAL . This is a real working mine to get the feel of being underground. Entry fee for the BIG OPAL is included in our price. (You take spiral steps to go underground)

  • Learn about our famous Black Opal and opal mining in Lightning Ridge

  • Attend an opal cutting & polishing demonstration by an experienced opal cutter & carver and an expert in her field

  • Fantastic photo opportunities on this tour. (We are happy to stop the bus for you to get the picture you want - just let us know)

  • Pick-up and drop-off conveniently from your accommodation, the Visitor Information Center or a pre-designated place of your choice

Take a trip back in time and experience what Lightning Ridge was like about 20 years ago


The FULL DAY TOUR to the Grawin, Glengarry & Sheepyard Opal fields is as a whole day experiene you will never forget. It is starting the moment you leave Lightning Ridge on the scenic journey to the opal fields via Cumborah in our air-conditioned bus. A lot of the mining for our famous black opal happens in this area and you will see all the sights and all the unique bush pubs out there with one of our experienced tour guides.

  • Head from Lightning Ridge approximately 80km through farming country and see goats, emus, kangaroos and a variety of birds on your way to the opal fields

  • Morning tea at the "Grawin Club in the Scrub". See the famous Grawin golf course and its great "log style cabin" club

  • Travel through the mining fields and view working mines & opal mining machinery

  • Try your luck fossicking (looking for opals) on the opal dumps with introduction and guidance from our knowledgeable tour guide

  • Enjoy your lunch from the tucker van at the "Glengarry Hilton". You can have a chat with the locals and grab a coldy a the bar if you feel like one

  • Visit the Sheepyard community war memorial and museum

  • Stop for a look around and photo opportunity at the "Sheepyard Inn". Grab a cold drink or cuppa if you like and talk to the local miners

  • More photo opportunities on the trip back in our bus to Lighting Ridge

  • We conveniently pick you up and drop you off at your accommodation, the Visitor Information Center or a pre-designated place of your choice

Our tour guides are opal miners them-self and happy to share as much information and first hand experience with you as you are interested in.
